Why Canada needs more immigrants?
To keep its economy strong, Canada welcomes high levels of immigration. A large portion of Canada’s population is older and its birth rate is also lower than most countries. Because of this, economic and fiscal pressure occurs. Due to its low economic growth, Canada is unable to raise enough revenue to support services such as health care, education, and other vital areas for the country to have a high standard of living.
Canada now relies on immigration to grow its population and labour force, as well as to grow its economy in a larger way.
Since 1988, Canada has regularly welcomed over 200,000 immigrants per year. In recent years, its levels have increased to over 400,000 annually. Canada received around three times more immigrants per capita than the United States.
Over the next few years, the number of immigrants to Canada could continue to gradually increase. Immigration remains a key component of supporting a strong economy and fiscal position.
Finally, immigration can help strengthen Canada’s tax base and support government spending.
