Australia – Visa Extensions for Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa Holders
The Government will extend Skilled Regional (Provisional) (subclass 489, 491 and 494) visas by 3 years if the visa holder is affected by COVID-19 restrictions.
We will extend visas for Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa holders if the primary visa holder was outside Australia at any time between 1 February 2020 and 14 December 2021 (inclusive) as the holder of a valid Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa.
Affected Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa holders will then have time to make travel plans to start or resume living and working in regional Australia. For more information see the COVID-19 and the border – regional Australia page.
COVID-19 Concessions
Skilled Regional (Provisional) (Subclass 489, 491 and 494) Visas
We will extend Skilled Regional (Provisional) visas for three years on 18 February 2022. This will apply to visa holders affected by COVID-19 international travel restrictions.
We will extend visas for Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa holders if the primary visa holder was outside of Australia at any time between 1 February 2020 and 14 December 2021 (inclusive) as the holder of a valid Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa.
Affected visa holders will then have time to make travel arrangements to start or resume living and working in regional Australia.
No action is required now, unless specified in the notes below. These visa extensions are subject to the commencement of new regulations. We will notify eligible visa holders of the extension once these regulations are in effect.
Important notes:
- It is a responsibility of all visa holders to remain lawful while in Australia.
- You may wish to apply for another visa if you are a subclass 489 visa holder whose visa is about to expire, or has expired.
If you do not apply for another visa you will need to leave Australia. Visa applications are a personal decision. This will depend on your circumstances. You may wish to seek help from a registered migration agent

Skilled Regional (subclass 887) visa
From 19 September 2020, COVID-19 concessions were made available for eligible prospective Skilled Regional (subclass 887) visa applicants, who may have been disadvantaged by the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as border closures, restrictions imposed on business and the economic downturn.

Visa holders experiencing financial difficulties
