Why IELTS required for Canada PR?

IELTS is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test precedes your idea of migration or further education since 1989.

The government of Canada recognizes 4 language tests regarding immigration and IELTS is on the top. The remaining are

Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP)

Test de Connaissance du français pour le Canada (TCF Canada) and

Test d’Evaluation du Français (TEF)

You can find CELPIP in Canada and some centers in Dubai and New York City. However, TCF and TEF evaluate French ability.

IELTS Crucial For Canada Express Entry:

Every immigrant under express entry has to prove their proficiency in English or French (or both for an impressive score).

So, Express entry is such a level where candidates compete eagerly for their all expected Invitation to Apply (ITA) for PR.

Now, if one is not good at French, then the candidate can’t take the CELPIP English test.  In such a situation, you ought to pass the IELTS test. In the case of Express entry, it is to take the IELTS General Training but not the academic version.

Canada Express Entry Programs:

Canada offers three different programs for Express entry.

  •         Federal skilled Worker Class (FSWC)
  •         Federal skilled Trades Class (FSTC)
  •         Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

However, while checking out the eligibility rankings, although there are 3 different programs, all candidates rank according to the same scale. It is the ‘Comprehensive Ranking System’ or CRS.

Other Canadian Immigration Options:

For an economic migrant, Express Entry is not the only option. There are many other programs completely different from Express entry. They are called Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). These programs are based on specific requirements also.

For example, people who intend to settle in Quebec province need different eligibility requirements. In addition to this, economic individuals like investors, entrepreneurs and self – employed people have different programs for them.

Did you know? English language proficiency is the most crucial element in all Canada immigration programs. Depending on such factors, applicants must be serious about this and be calculative.

And, it doesn’t matter what program you have taken, your language test score can influence your score totals.

So, Express Entry and PNPs are the two programs that accept IELTS General training. Remember carefully that they do not accept IELTS academic version.

Provincial Immigration Categories:

It is a fact that all Canada’s provincial nomination programs primarily look for linguistic abilities. And the required level differs corresponding to immigration streams.

According to the Federal Comprehensive Ranking System, language proficiency is required for sure. But many provinces are able to manage their streams and therefore language requirements are specifically given.

IELTS – Canada Education:

Do you intend to study in Canada? Then you might have to submit your English language ability proof. This will be your first step in order to get acceptance from a Canadian college or university. They will issue the Canadian study permit.

Here, the best option is the IELTS exam. But be cautious here IELTS academic version is needed and IELTS general training is for immigration purposes (don’t be confused).

Hence, as mentioned earlier the language proficiency proof might be or might not be asked. We recommend to consult your respective universities and gather all the requirements needed.

Minimum IELTS Score For Canada PR:

IELTS minimum score exists according to the program the candidate chosen. It is the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB).

For example, CLB varies with programs and it is 7 for Federal Skilled Worker applicants. If a candidate gains a score of 6.0 in speaking, listening, reading and writing; the CLB is 7.

More Examples:

If a candidate applies in the space of Canadian Experience Class in NOC 0 or A occupation, the required score is 6.0 in IELTS. But if the job is NOC B skill level, then IELTS score of 5.0 is required in speaking, writing and listening and 4.0 in reading.

Consider the Federal Skilled Trades candidates, it needs a CLB level 4 i.e. a score of 4.0 in writing and speaking, 3.5 in reading, and 4.5 in listening.

Simple, it all depends on how well you perform.

IELTS score required for Canada PR

The Canadian immigration department accepts two types of English proficiency test scores for Canadian PR status. However, the obtained scores will be converted and cross matched with the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) to assess the applicant’s language proficiency  level. Following are the two English proficiency tests that are commonly considered for CLB

CELPIP: Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program

IELTS: International English Language Testing System

Express entry:  This is the pathway for skilled immigrants who want to settle permanently in Canada and engage with the Canadian economy. The Immigration Authority designed two major programmes to issue entry permits for highly skilled immigrants: the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Canadian Experience Class.

A. Federal skilled worker program

Speaking Listening Reading Writing CLB level Points
6.0 6.0-7.0 6.0 6.0 7 4
6.5 7.5 6.5 6.5 8 5
7.0 8.0 7.0 7.0 9 6
7.5-9.0 8.5-9.0 8.0-9.0 7.5- 9.0 10 and above 6

One should at least have an overall score of 6 bands to get their candidature considered for the federal skilled worker program.

B. Federal skilled trades program

Listening Reading Writing Speaking CLB level
4.5 3.5 4.0 4.0 4
5.0 4.0 5.0 5.0 5
5.5 5.0 5.5 5.5 6
6.0 6.0 6.0 6.0 7
7.5 6.5 6.5 6.5 8
8.0 7.0 7.0 7.0 9
8.5-9.0 8.0-9.0 7.5-9.0 7.5-9.0 10 and above

Language proficiency levels for the federal skilled trades program (FSTP) are lower than those for the federal skilled worker program (FSWP). The minimum IELTS overall score required for FSTP is 4 bands. However, it’d be better to acquire at least an overall band score of 6 to improve the chances of getting PR status.

C. Canadian Experience class

NOC TEER Listening Reading Writing Speaking CLB level
0 and 1 8.5-9.0 8.0-9.0 7.5-9.0 7.5-9.0 10 and above
0 and 1 8.0 7.0 7.0 7.0 9
0 and 1 7.5 6.5 6.5 6.5 8
0 and 1 6.0 6.0 6.0 6.0 7
2 and 3 5.5 5.0 5.5 5.5 6
2 and 3 5.0 4.0 5.0 5.0 5

For Canadian experience class programmes the applicant at least needs an overall band score of 5.

GOOD SCORE FOR CANADA PR:

A good score always varies, because you should know the key edge in the Express Entry CRS. For example; if you score CLB level 9 or better, you have a chance of a huge amount of improvement. This means getting a 7.0 in IELTS reading, writing and speaking and 8.0 or better in listening.

Along with such a good score, try to reach CLB 9 in all abilities which will promote a leap in the points. Eventually, your high CLB score will tremendously enhance your CRS score regarding Express Entry.

Just for your information, considering factors like age, experience, qualification, etc, a leap of 100 CRS Points can be expected from a little boost in the CLB score. Remember, the total CRS score is 439 points.

IELTS AND CLB SCORES RELATIVITY:

Look! Your band score in IELTS is converted into CLB scores and there are 2 prominent CLB scores. CLB 7 and CLB 9 are Canadian Language Benchmark scores converted from your IELTS band score.

These scores are derived from each section. Note that CLB 7 is extracted from IELTS band scores Reading – 6, writing – 6, speaking – 6 and listening – 6.

Similarly, CLB 9 comes from the IELTS band scores of Reading – 7, writing – 7, speaking – 7 and listening – 8.

Conclusion:

Did you observe! As said above, an increase in one point led to a huge difference in your CRS edge score for the PR invitation to apply process.

IELTS may not be the only way for Canada Immigration, but it is the most preferable and convincing way. Because it is a high stake English Language test popular in Canada. IELTS is readily accepted for Canada immigration and citizenship.
