Hong Kong immigration to Canada is booming
Hong Kong used to be the number one source of immigration to Canada. Recent IRCC data indicate that Hong Kong residents are moving to Canada in record numbers for permanent residence, employment, and education. Immigrants from Hong Kong are re surging to Canada.
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Hong Kong permanent residents have increased by 50 percent, and student and work permit applications are up four-fold from pre-pandemic levels.
Until 1997, Hong Kong residents made up the majority of immigrants to Canada, with 30,000 moving to Canada each year. Hong Kong was overtaken by China, India, and the Philippines in 1998, which remain Canada’s three leading sources of new immigrants to this day.
Before Hong Kong’s sovereignty passed to China in 1997, immigration from Hong Kong to Canada boomed. Due to uncertainty about the ramifications of the handover, Hong Kong residents moved to countries like Canada to seek economic and political stability. Prior to the pandemic, about 1,500 Hong Kong residents were granted permanent residence in Canada each year until after the handover.
In 2020, Canada will have a long-standing social, cultural and economic relationship with Hong Kong by announcing various programs to encourage Hong Kong residents to come to Canada as workers, students and immigrants. I tried to build.
This included the launch of two new immigration programs:
- Stream A offers permanent residence to Hong Kong residents that have graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institution in the last three years.
- Stream B offers permanent residence to Hong Kong residents that have graduated from a post-secondary institution in Canada or abroad and have at least one year of work experience in Canada.
To help those seeking Canadian permanent resident status meet the eligibility criteria of Stream B, Canada also unveiled an Open Work Permit for Hong Kong Graduates.
